Among the various departments of Govt. of Tamilnadu, the Medical & Rural Health Services Department (formerly called Medical Department) was formed during the pre-independent era by the then British ruled Govt. of Madras Province. One of the oldest districts of that time, Madurai was bifurcated during 1985 and a separate district having its capital town at Dindigul was formed and the Medical & Rural Health Services Department is functioning under the administrative head of the Joint Director of Health Services.
