The Study Visit of Department Related Parliamentary Committee on Home affairs Meeting
The Parliamentary Committee on Home affairs has conducted a meeting regarding the discussion on Disaster Preparedness and Management in Tamilnadu and particularly Kodaikanal on 07.01.2026 at 12.00 PM in Kodaikanal.

The following was discussed in the Committee Meeting :-
Tamil Nadu has 38 district in which 14 coastal districts and the coastal length is 1076 KM which is the 2nd longest in India. The eastern part of the Tamil Nadu having coastal line so that this parts being vulnerable by multiple disaster
Chennai basin received heavy rain fall 40 cm in 2015 and 2023 but in 2015 it was recorded in 7 days and in 2023 it was recorded 44 hours very quickly than the year of 2015. With the efforts of government and work under taken, immediate loses and damages were reduced in the year of 2023.Michaung cyclone(2023) had caused 17 human loss, 384 livestock loss, 2189 hut and houses loss and 18755 hectors of crap loses and the estimated temporary restoration cost is Rs.7033.45Cr and estimated permanent restoration cost is Rs.12659.24.
In Tamilnadu 2/3 of land situated near by coastal areas and is prone to the disasters of cyclone, flood and tsunami and also flood inundation areas are wide spreadThe western side of the state (Western Ghats) are additionally prone to the landslides, Forest fire and Lightening.The Tamil Nadu state disaster Management risk reduction agency is functioning under the chairmanship of CRA /State relief commissioner and it has been established as three types of sectors such as 1.multi hazard monitoring an early warning center 2.Experts/Consultants and 3.Administration.The Tamil Nadu government is receiving the Forecast services from IMD GFS, ECMWF, and SAC-WRF. dissemination of forecast to the districts upto Street level flood inundation forecast for Chennai is being carried out by the Installation of 1400 Automatic Rain Gauge (ARG) and 17 Automatic water level Recorder (AWLR) for obtaining the real time rainfall data.
Also Chennai real time flood forecasting project(CRTFF) is being under execution for Forecast services.
